Photography Course Tutors - Julie Crespel

Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got into photography?

After receiving my first underwater camera at age 8, I was instantly hooked. I temporarily became an art director after finishing my degree but was always drawn to photography and after taking a year photographing my way around France, set up my first studio in Tahiti, where my photographic career began.

What inspired you to become a photography tutor?

Every photographer should possess curiosity, passion and creativity. The ability to tell a story through images is also essential.

What would you consider one of your best pieces of work and why?

One of my best pieces of work I have printed on a 2 x 3m canvas on my wall. It's a black and white image taken up a mountain looking down at the water's edge at 3 surfers shot through a palm tree.

It was shot with a 600mm lens and the detail in the water is incredible. The reflections of the surfers mirrored in the water and the blurred palm in the foreground make an interesting composition.

While the location of Wategoes beach is a special one, the seconds in which I had to shoot this picture, with the sun emerging momentarily after days of relentless rain, captured a relaxed moment amidst the chaos of Covid times.

Reminding me of the importance of immersing ourselves in nature at every opportunity.

What is your teaching philosophy when it comes to photography?

Everyone has a different way of learning, so I find it interesting to delve into the ways in which students learn and tailor my teaching individually to adapt. My approach is very hands-on, I enjoy watching students develop their creativity by experimenting.

What are some key skills and knowledge areas you personally focus on in your courses?

I like to focus on camera skills initially. Developing an eye for composition and looking at things from a different angle, in order to focus on creatively capturing the essence of a person, a moment or a scene.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

Often from nature, fine art, especially abstract art, architecture, fashion and cultures. You can often find me in galleries, in the ocean or exploring new places.

Are there any photographers you find most influential in your work?

Henri Cartier Bresson and many of the Magnum photographers, Max Dupain, Annie Liebowitz, Helmut Newton, Patrick Demarchelier, Guy Bourdin, Slim Aarons.

What is your favourite part about being a tutor?

Watching the evolution of my talented students into talented photographers

What advice would you give to new students?

You will never know everything about photography, there is always something new to learn. It's a lifelong practise, also the most rewarding one!

I like photography as a hobby and even after searching for hours for more information on the internet about photography, I found there were no proper guidelines and the information was very confusing. After I took up this course I was suddenly back on track, everything was covered comprehensively in this course.
